In July the Northern Ireland (Executive) bill was hijacked by amendments forcing the imposition of both abortion and gay marriage on Northern Ireland. Unless the Assembly is re-established first, it will come into force on 21st October. It will introduce a regime of abortion up to 28 weeks for any reason (Down’s syndrome, cleft lip, etc – see here for more details) in which there is no requirement for a doctor to be involved and which offers no provision for conscientious objection by medical professionals.
A protest has been organised for Friday 6th September at Stormont Estate at 7pm involving people from all religious and political groups. If you believe in the sanctity of human life, created in the image of God, this is an opportunity to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.
The protest will gather at the lower gates of Stormount Estate at 7pm. At the blow of a whistle it will walk silently and slowly to the foot of the steps to Parliament Buildings where they will stand in silence, heads bowed and lights held high for six minutes (one for each country) until another whistle is blown.
Those attending are advised to arrive early to get parked, or take the Glider – if you are able, please park at a distance and walk to Stormont to let less able people park closer. Please only use the public car park inside the estate beside Assembly buildings.
Wear black and carry an electric light (mobile phone light or a torch). No banners other than the @NIvoiceless logo; no slogans other than “We were not asked; they cannot speak“.
This protest is cross-community and not affiliated to any existing campaign, religious group or political party. The organisers are a small group of residents of NI and the protest is for all concerned citizens.
